Avalon is a surf beach approximately 500m long, facing south-east, and bordered by 60m high sandstone cliffs and the rock platforms of Bilgola Head and Hole in the Wall. The beach faces south east and is bordered by a high headland, Bilgola Head to the north and the lower, shaley Newport Head and rocks to the south. The beach has a single sand bar cut by two shifting beach rips and permanent rips against the rocks at each end.

General Conditions

  • Good swimming and body surfing conditions
  • Strong shore break at times
  • Excellent surfing conditions at the north end
  • Good surfing breaks along the beach. Best in North Easterly winds.

Surfing

Let’s just say, there’s a reason Kelly Slater lived in Av for 15 years. The reef breaks off of Avalon rock pool (known as Little Av) has some pretty epic conditions when the winds are coming through from the north east.

On the other side is North Avalon which is also renowned for handling big northern swell with classic big lefts cranking down the beach.
