Australian Citizenship
Australian citizenship symbolises our unity as a nation. It represents commitment to this country and its people, the values we share and our common future. It also represents the sense of belonging to the country you’ve decided to make your home.
How Do I Become an Australian Citizen?
To start the process, visit the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) website or call their information line on 131 880 for information about the Citizenship Test and your eligibility. Once your application is processed, the DIBP will mail your approval and the date and timing of your ceremony.
Next Steps
There’s a six month waiting list for a ceremony and we’ll only receive your details one month before your allocated ceremony date. Your invitation from the DIBP will arrive approximately three weeks before the ceremony. Council will then email you a personal invitation that you will need to respond to.
Celebrating Australian Citizenship
Becoming an Australian citizen is something to celebrate! It marks an important milestone by formally welcoming newer citizens into the Australian family. This ceremony is an official part of the process. You become an Australian citizen on the date you attend the Citizenship Ceremony and make a pledge of commitment to Australia.
